Visiting Polish Kings – Wawel Hill Sightseeing

Home Page » Things to do in Krakow » Visiting Polish Kings – Wawel Hill Sightseeing

Wawel Hill has a lot to offer. Availability of some attractions depends on the season, but most of them you can visit all over the year, like Cathedral, Royal Palace or permanent exhibitions inside. So check out what can you see on Wawel Hill!

Wawel Hill sightseeing

Wawel hill sightseeing – permanent exhibitions available all over the year:

  • Royal Chambers – intendant’s room on the ground floor and representative rooms on the second floor, eg. Senator’s room, Under the Eagle room, Tournament room, Deputies’ room and Royal Chapel.
  • Royal Apartments – tour through the first floor where royal private chambers were established in the 16th century.
  • Crown Treasury and Armory – a place with many valuable objects. You can see famous royal sword so-called ‘Szczerbiec’ (‘the jagged’).
  • Oriental Art – this exhibition shows the influence of Turkish art on Polish nobles due to politics and business contacts.
  • Lost Wawel – archaeological and architectural reserve and lapidary.

Wawel Hill sightseeing

Seasonal routes on Wawel Hill (closed in winter):

  • Dragon’s Den – 80 meters of winding corridors, related to the alleged presence of the mythical Wawel’s Dragon.
  • Sandomirian Tower – known also as the fire tower.
  • Castle gardens

You cannot miss the Royal Cathedral, place of worship of St. Stanislaus. You can see here:

  • Chapels: of Vasa and Potocki family, Chapel of the Holy Cross, and of Queen Sophia
  • Cathedral Museum with a huge collection of religious art
  • Sigismund Bell
  • Royal Tombs
  • Tombs of Marshal Joseph Piłsudski and President Jarosław Karczyński

This place will take your breath away. It is visited by over a million tourists every yera! In 1978 Wawel Cathedral became a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Program.

It is good to combine Wawel Hill sightseeing with the Royal Route to learn a lot about the history of Poland and Polish monarchs. The tour includes Barbican, St. Mary’s Church, Cloth Hall, Grodzka St. with its beautiful churches, and Kanonicza St.
